STEENBURG GOLF CLUB
SteenburgFrom the first day of play, Steenberg has received a deserved reputation for its magnificent greens.  This remains a fact several years later as you play this course set under beautiful mountain surrounds and meandering through the vineyards of south africa’s oldest wine farm.

The location of this real estate, hotel and golf course development, nestling under the Constantiaberg mountains, provides so many glorious views of vines, pines, bush and the mountain flora.  This, added to the well-manicured fairways and greens of the golf course, explains why the estate can be described as a green haven. Steenberg (means mountain of stone) has proved to be one of south africa’s most successful new golf developments.

On the course, the introduction of plants, flowers and trees to enhance the existing visual beauty, has been fanatically monitored to ensure everything is truly indigenous. Peter Matkovich has followed the gentle natural slopes of the estate and created a challenge by introducing large waste bunkers, running creeks, water hazards and those excellent greens.  Large aprons around the greens are another special feature and the vineyards really do provide a unique visual aspect as well as a charming added hazard.

ATLANTIC BEACH GOLF ESTATE

Atlantic BeachThis course is carved out of west coast fynbos and dunes in the tradition of the classic scottish “links”.  There is a mixture of bunker designs n the course.  Apart from the conventional sand traps, sandy wastes with fynbos integrated in them are a feature.  There are no water hazards or trees but the natural fynbos of the landscape is ample enough to augment the challenges.  The greens are large, sometimes huge, and many of them have big slopes that require great concentration.

Straightwayhead Hotel

ERINVALE GOLF CLUB

Erinvale Golf Club Nestled in the foothills of the Helderberg and Hottentots Holland mountains, Erinvale is one of South Africa’s great golfing challenges.  It is certainly one of designer Gary Player’s most successful courses and became familiar to an international audience after the world cup of golf was played here in 1996.

The first nine holes are built on flat terrain with challenging holes made more difficult by strategic water hazards and an array of different style bunkers.  These sand traps range from traditional, large, well shaped bunkers, to some with railway sleepers and sandy slopes. The second nine holes are on undulating high ground.

Here the scenic splendour might distract the players from the continuing challenge.  Once again water and bunkers are the main features with the added test of sloping lies.  The greens at Erinvale are huge and well shaped, allowing for several different pin placements.   It’s a tough walk, so a cart is recommended if you’re on holiday and relaxing! You also have a magnificent panoramic view of mountains, winelands and distant False Bay.

Pearl valley golf estate
pearl Valley Golf Estate and Spa Pearl valley is the most recent reflection of Jack Nicklaus’s dedication to layout, routing and golfing strategy. The course has been designed with a delicate balance in mind: to be present a sufficiently rewarding challenge, and an infinitely enjoyable experience. The course is going to be demonstrably friendly for the ordinary golfer - no gimmicks, no extremes yet offers a challenge if the back tees are brought into play and pin positions are tightened up.

There is a range of tees on each hole (all in all, tees cover 1,6ha of ground). Water is omnipresent but not in your face. There are abundant and elegantly landscaped bunkers (sand surfaces, including waste bunkers, account for 20 000 square metres of the course!). Almost every hole is played against the backdrop of the mountains that ring the area. Cool grasses have been used the fairways are 90 percent rye and 10 percent fescue; the rough is a Fescue/Kentucky Blue mix and the greens are Crenshaw Bent and the greens are large, averaging 500 square metres each, with slopes that are gentle and receptive.

First impressions of the new layout would seem to confirm the value of the Nicklaus "signature", an imprimatur that guarantees that the design and construction of the course has received his constant, personal attention. This "signature" puts Pearl Valley in the same lofty realms as such legendary, world-class layouts as Muirfield and Valhalla. Even at this early stage of development, the course has a picturesque playability that promises to springboard it into one of the top golfing venues in the country. The proof of the putting, it might be said, is in the playing.

De zalze golf club

De Zalze
The De Zalze Golf Course situated within the De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate was designed by Peter Matkovich [course architect for both Leopard Rock and Arabella] who has made the most of the stunning setting and created a course that places a premium on accuracy.

The course has an excellent mix of parkland holes with its main defences coming from the water features on several of the holes as well as the oak tree lined Blaauwklippen River which winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals. The golf course, open since 2000 with the brand new cape styled thatch clubhouse [opened december 2003] is an exciting addition to the group of international standard championship golf courses recently built in the western cape region of south africa.

The De Zalze Golf Course [co-developed & managed by Spier] has already hosted a number of championship events and will together with the Spier resort be the host venue for the 2006 world amateur team championships [Eisenhower and Espirito Santo trophies] which will attract teams from approximately 80 countries around the globe. The name De Zalze originates from the early wine farmers who produced wines on the three farms making up De Zalze, namely, Groote Zalze, Kleine Zalze & de Vleie.

There are historical buildings on the estate dating back to 1838 as well as a manor house and precinct. In 2000 the Spier Group purchased an interest in the property and together with Kleine Zalze have re-modelled the estate into one of the most sought after golf real estate properties in the Cape Winelands of South Africa. The estate boasts a working wine farm [Kleine Zalze] as well as fairways surrounded by vineyards, olive groves & lavender fields, which will all produce marketable crops for the estate.

De Zalze Golf Club respects and upholds the traditions of golf and in that respect requests that all golfers and visitors to the golf course and clubhouse obey our dress code as follows; on the golf course - standard acceptable golf dress for both men and ladies. This excludes any t-shirts, denim jeans, beach baggies, running & rugby/soccer shorts etc. Sleeveless shirts for ladies only. If unsure please enquire beforehand at registration / cash desk. In the clubhouse - a minimum of smart casual at all times. Long trousers in the clubhouse lounge and bar areas after sunset.

Footwear - only proper golf shoes with soft spikes on the course.
No trainers / running shoes. No 'slip slops' in the clubhouse areas.
We thank you for your kind understanding.

Arabella Golf Estate

Arabella country estate
Peter Matkovich, the golf course architect, admits that he was able to achieve a truly well balanced layout, with a mix of long and short par fours, different directional par 3’s and a blend of high risk and reward par 5’s, all of this on terrain he descries as ‘made’ for a golf course. The terrain is indeed quite spectacular, with the land bordering South Africa’s largest lagoon and the gentle Kogelberg mountains as a constant backdrop.

Arabella means “beautiful land” in italian and it is no co-incidence that this translates to the experience to be enjoyed by every golfer on this wonderful golf course. The whole experience is of expertly manicured Kikuyu fairways that lead to large undulating bent grass greens.  The balance is in only to uphill holes and several flat and downhill holes, making this an easy course to walk. If you are playing this golf course for the first time, you will judge the four finishing holes as some of the most memorable and challenging you have ever played.   This will be especially true if the strong breezes, associated with this area at certain times of the year, are in attendance.

Fancourt hotel and country club estate
The spectacular clubhouse at fancourt golf course, with its elegant white facade and natural wood trimmings, blends beautifully with the lush surroundings of the 350-acre estate.   Of particular interest is the “hall of fame” in the main corridor that features Gary Players twelve all time favorite golfing greats.

The heart of this world class hotel is the magnificent manor house, a national monument, built by Sir Henry Fancourt White.   Here you will find an air of luxury and tradition in tranquil surroundings - particularly in the garden lounge with its cosy decor and roaring fires in winter.

The luxurious, privately owned lodges on the estate complement the tasteful, comfortable accommodation offered by the hotel, perfectly, and many of the rooms afford breathtaking views of the estate and majestic Outeniqua Mountains. To stay at Fancourt is to experience elegant country-style life, personal and efficient service, superb cuisine and the challenge of playing on top class, perfectly maintained golf courses in the heart of the garden route.

Hermanus golf club
Although the attractive coastal village of Hermanus may be world famous for its whales, its golf course is also worthy of a special visit. The golf course is set in very picturesque surrounds in the shadow of Raed-Na-Gael mountain, with tree-lined fairways, bent-grass greens and some very interesting and rewarding holes.

A resident troop of baboons regularly romps across the fairways of the (almost) by-the-sea golf course.  Mountain backdrops and tree-lined fairways provide a pleasant visual experience as you tackle some entertaining golf holes. The practice range is used regularly by teaching pros for golf clinics making Hermanus an excellent place in which to improve your golfing skills.

The links golf course
The Links at Fancourt is without doubt the most impressive piece of golf design and construction ever in South Africa. Fancourt owner Dr Hasso Plattner, who took a very hands-on function in the creation, commissioned a golf course, which would not only be a thorough test for every golfer, but would also rank among the top courses in the world.

Player’s design team spent months studying the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland and then, armed with inspiration from the best that those countries had to offer, embarked on the ambitious task of recreating some of their finest holes to make a genuine links test on what was once an airfield. The result is awe-inspiring and has elicited praise from some of the world’s finest golfers – the links was the host venue for the 2003 Presidents Cup, which ended in an historic tie after a dramatic play-off between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els.

In early 2005, it was the host venue for the women’s world cup of golf, which was won by the diminutive duo of Rui Kitada and Ai Miyzato of Japan. In December 2006 the links hosted the SAA open, the world’s second-oldest national open championship. The Links at Fancourt is a private club, with play restricted to members and their invited guests. There are limited times available to guests staying at Fancourt’s Hotel – booking is essential.

There is little doubt that a round at The Links is a special experience, enhanced greatly by the expert caddies at the club. These caddies are among the best in the world and are sure to assist any standard of golfer negotiate his or her way around The Links. When playing The Links, it is difficult to believe that one is not in Scotland or Ireland, until, that is, one notices the imposing Outeniqua mountain range that rises impressively in the background.

The Montagu Golf Course
Montagu The Montagu is a much celebrated parkland course and has been ranked as the number-one golf course in South Africa in the past. It has recently undergone major renovations with several holes being redesigned and has two completely new holes – the 1st and the 9th.

"With golf critics becoming more discerning and the increase in new modern courses, we believed it was time to rejuvenate the Montagu layout and improve the course immeasurably," says resort general manager, Ingrid Diesel. "We believe the new-look course, which has now grown in superbly, has been restored to its former glory where it will once again hold its head high amongst the best in the world."

As with the Outeniqua, play is restricted to members, their guests and resort guests, so there is ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience. It is, however, always a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get your desired tee time. The warm-up area, featuring a full-length range and a chipping and bunker practice area, is available to all golfers before play. Golf carts are available for hire, weather permitting, while knowledgeable caddies are available too. Please note that to improve your playing enjoyment and to ensure a steady pace-of-play, it is expected that there are at least two caddies for each fourball.

PEZULA GOLF COURSE
Image Pezula Championship Golf Course, Knysna, Garden Route: Situated in the very heart of the Garden Route, on sweeping coastal cliffs, east of the charming town of Knysna, Pezula encompasses a Private Estate, a Five Star Resort Hotel, a world-class Championship Golf Course and Club.

The Championship Golf Course lies high above the Indian Ocean and the vast Knysna lagoon - a sweeping spectacle of fairways and greens rolling through the pristine indigenous landscape. The Championship Course is primarily for member play, offering referred access to visitors on a space-available basis. The course’s designers, Ron Fream and David Dale have compared the look of Pezula golf course to that of Gleneagles in the Scottish Highlands and Pebble beach on the Monterey coastline.

A terrain of rolling fairways, fynbos and eyebrow bunkers does, however, make it very difficult to walk this course. (panic golf carts are provided for all golfers). The five different tee options on every hole cater for all skill levels. No two challenges, or views, are alike.

The signature holes are the three holes built on the cliff top overlooking the ocean; the par-five 13th, par-four 14th and the par-three 15th. The par-four 14th is particularly challenging - it is short and requires you to lay-up before firing at the pin. The green is completely surrounded by bunkers so be careful not to overshoot out-of-bounds and over the cliff.

The stylishly appointed Pezula Clubhouse includes a gourmet restaurant, bar, plush private lounge with library, and a boutique pro shop. A heated pool, short game practice area, tennis and leisure facility are also available to members and guests.
